Project roadmap

Start of the project – about CarMen

Kick-off meeting, project governance set-up, roles and responsibilities clarified, and initial work plan defined across all partners.

End users and use cases specifications

Definition of the use cases, assumptions and perimeters specific to each of them. Three use cases are described, each specific to a specific mobility mode: Pedestrians, Coaches, cars and trucks.

Technical and architectural functional requirements definition

Identification of the main specifications relating to the system’s functionalities and technical constraints in order to establish a coherent architectural framework.

Biometric sensors and analysis

Definition of research and development activities on the collection and analysis of biometric data for face, iris and periocular recognition. Definition of lines of development relating to studies specific to the detection of attempts to manipulate biometric data.

Border and infrastructure management

Collection and integration of operational constraints and infrastructure needs from end-users in different border crossing contexts.

Integrations, biometrics testing and border

Definition of integration environments for biometric modules and alignment with border operation conditions.

Biometric sensors and analysis

Research and development activities on the collection and analysis of biometric data for face, iris and periocular recognition. Definition of biometric data acquisition protocols. Benchmark on sensor cameras.

BOTM: fusion and reliability analysis

Development of multimodal biometric fusion techniques and robustness evaluation of recognition systems in motion.

Initial architecture

Consolidated system design based on user requirements and technical data, as a basis for integration and testing. Definition of flow diagrams between the different functional blocks of the architecture.

Border and infrastructure management – last release

Finalisation of infrastructure requirements and validation with stakeholders for future integration.

Start of „integration phase“

Start of integration of individual biometric and software components into a common platform for testing and refinement. Emulation of all functionalities relating to the demonstrators.

Applicative border and infrastructure management

Deployment of infrastructure adaptations and software layers to support pilot sites and use case scenarios.

Start of „demonstration phase“

Launch of demonstration phase with real-world deployment of integrated systems and field validation. Preparation of training plans for the demonstrators.

„Cars“ use cases

Deployment of the demonstrator for the movement of cars and trucks.

„Pedestrian“ and „Coaches“ use cases

Field demonstrations involving pedestrian and coach border crossings with „on-the-move“ biometric checks.

End of CarMen project

Final evaluation of all activities, impact assessment, and sharing of best practices across partners and stakeholders.
